Ballot Box

American or possibly English ballot box, early 19th century.

Decorated with gilt scrolls and the initials “W. R. G. 6.” Secretly casting a white or black marble into this ballot box would decide whether one was accepted into an exclusive club, thus, the expression to be “black-balled” originated.
